Natural Language Processing (NLP) is a branch of artificial intelligence that enables computers to understand, interpret, and generate human language, just like the way we actually speak and write, with all its ambiguity, context, and nuance. Think of NLP as a bridge between human communication and machine understanding: it powers virtual assistants that respond to voice commands, email filters that detect spam, translation tools that convert between languages, and sentiment analysis that gauges customer opinions from reviews or social media.

Modern NLP systems rely heavily on deep learning and large language models trained on massive text datasets to capture context and produce human-like responses. Common NLP tasks include language detection (identifying which language text is written in), key phrase extraction (finding important terms), named entity recognition (labeling people, organizations, locations), sentiment analysis (determining if text is positive, negative, or neutral), and question answering (finding specific information in documents).

For the AI-900 certification exam, students must demonstrate understanding of NLP workloads on Azure and the services that support them. The exam tests conceptual knowledge of the language services in AI Foundry Tools, which provides pre-built APIs for tasks like sentiment analysis, language detection, key phrase extraction, and named entity recognition. Success requires recognizing appropriate use cases and understanding how Azure services handle challenges like multilingual text, context-dependent meanings, and responsible AI considerations in language processing.
