Artificial Intelligence (AI) is a broad field of computer science focused on creating systems that can perform tasks typically requiring human intelligence, such as recognizing speech, understanding language, making decisions, and identifying patterns. Unlike traditional software that follows rigid, pre-programmed rules, AI systems learn from data and experience, allowing them to adapt and improve over time.

At its core, AI works by combining algorithms (step-by-step instructions), large datasets (examples to learn from), and computational power (processing hardware) to enable machines to mimic specific aspects of human thinking. The field encompasses several sub-disciplines, including machine learning (where systems improve through exposure to data), deep learning (which uses brain-inspired neural networks for complex tasks), and generative AI (which creates new content like text, images, or music). Each approach serves different purposes, from predicting stock prices to generating human-like conversations.

For the AI-900 certification exam, students must demonstrate understanding of fundamental AI concepts and their application on Azure, specifically the ability to identify common AI workloads and match them to appropriate Azure services. The exam tests conceptual knowledge across machine learning, computer vision, natural language processing, and generative AI, focusing on describing capabilities rather than implementation.
